Transit Tales: How Mastercard Turned AI-Powered Storytelling Into an Award-Winning Integrated Campaign

How do you turn an everyday commute into a meaningful brand experience, and connect creativity with commercial results? For Mastercard, Australian independent creative agency HERO developed Transit Tales, an AI-powered storytelling platform that transformed Sydney train journeys into personalised audio experiences. By combining generative AI, real-time transit data, out-of-home advertising, digital technology and audio storytelling, HERO created an integrated campaign that attracted 43,940 unique users in its first 30 days and delivered reported year-on-year uplifts of 6.5% in total Mastercard spend and 9% in transaction volume. The campaign went on to earn international recognition, including a WINA Grand Prix, two WINA Gold awards and the 2026 Global WOO Awards Technical Innovation Award.

Transit Tales demonstrates HERO’s approach to integrated creative advertising: starting with a human insight, giving the brand a meaningful role in people’s lives, and using technology to turn an ambitious creative idea into an experience audiences can actively participate in.

The challenge: make an everyday moment feel priceless

Mastercard’s global Priceless platform is built around the idea that everyday moments can become more meaningful experiences.

But in a competitive payments category, where contactless payment functionality is widely available, simply making a transaction faster is not always enough to distinguish a brand.

HERO identified an opportunity in a familiar part of urban life: the daily commute.

Sydney’s rail network serves approximately 1.2 million daily commuters. Many already use their smartphones throughout their journeys, yet commuting time is often spent scrolling through feeds or consuming fragmented content.

At the same time, research informing the campaign highlighted an appetite for reading and storytelling that everyday routines often make difficult to satisfy. Nearly 30% of Australians had not read or listened to a book in the preceding year, while more than half expressed a desire to read more.

The opportunity was to create something that made this otherwise unremarkable time more enjoyable while giving Mastercard a meaningful role in the experience.

Rather than interrupt commuters with another advertisement, HERO asked a different question: what if the journey itself determined the story?

The strategy: turn journey time into storytelling time

The strategic insight was simple: every journey has a duration, and a story can be created to fit it.

Train journeys are measurable. Their durations can be calculated using real-time transport data, and commuters already have access to mobile devices and audio.

HERO brought these elements together to create Transit Tales, a personalised storytelling platform that reimagined classic literature through unexpected genres and delivered each story according to the length of an individual commuter’s journey.

A classic novel could become a mystery thriller, a dystopian adventure, a superhero saga or a science-fiction story. Each experience was generated for the listener rather than selected from a library of pre-recorded stories.

The strategic ambition was to demonstrate that Mastercard could do more than facilitate the journey. It could make the journey itself more meaningful.

This transformed the role of the brand from payment provider to experience creator, bringing the Priceless proposition to life through something useful, entertaining and culturally relevant.

The idea: an AI-generated story that ends when your train arrives

Transit Tales connected the physical railway environment with a personalised digital experience.

QR codes across Sydney’s train and metro network invited commuters to scan, select their destination and begin a story tailored to their journey.

The platform combined three technological layers.

1. Real-time journey calibration

Live TfNSW/Opal transit data informed journey-duration calculations, enabling the experience to respond to the commuter’s actual trip rather than a predetermined listening time.

2. Generative AI storytelling

OpenAI’s GPT language models reimagined eight literary classics across four genres: Mystery Thriller, Dystopian Adventure, Superhero Saga and Science Fiction.

Rather than retrieving a pre-written story, the platform dynamically generated new narratives for individual journeys.

3. Adaptive audio production

A custom-built, proprietary AI audio engine assembled narration, pacing and sound design in real time, creating a produced audio experience tailored to the time available.

The defining feature was the relationship between the story and the journey. Each experience was designed to finish as the commuter arrived at their destination, turning journey duration into the creative organising principle.

AI was not simply added to an existing advertising format. It enabled a new kind of brand experience that would have been difficult to deliver through conventional pre-recorded content.

Integrated campaign execution: from station poster to personalised experience

Transit Tales was designed as an integrated campaign, with each channel contributing to discovery, participation and engagement.

Out-of-home advertising

Distinctive campaign posters across 215 Sydney train and metro stations introduced the concept and invited commuters to scan a QR code. The physical environment became the entry point to a digital storytelling experience.

Mobile and digital experience

A free mobile web app allowed commuters to select their destination and access their personalised audio story without needing to download a dedicated app.

Radio and audio

Radio activity extended the campaign beyond stations, reinforcing the idea during drive-time listening and reaching audiences in other commuting contexts.

Social media and influencer amplification

Geo-targeted social activity connected the campaign with audiences around station environments. Influencer activations demonstrated the experience in real-world commuting situations and supported further discovery.

Retail connection

At the end of their stories, listeners could discover and purchase the original literary works through Amazon Australia, connecting the digital experience with a tangible next step.

Accessibility

Audio stories were accompanied by AI-generated transcripts, allowing commuters who were deaf or hard of hearing to access the content.

The integration of physical advertising, mobile technology, personalised audio, social amplification and retail discovery created a connected experience rather than a collection of disconnected media placements.

The results: engagement, repeat usage and commercial performance

Transit Tales delivered measurable audience engagement and reported commercial improvements for Mastercard.

The campaign attracted 43,940 unique users in its first 30 days, generating more than 25,900 minutes of personalised audio consumption. Reported daily active usage reached 1,500 users, demonstrating continued participation beyond initial discovery.

The commercial results included a 6.5% year-on-year uplift in total Mastercard spend and a 9% uplift in transaction volume across the campaign period.

Together, these metrics provide evidence of the campaign’s engagement and commercial performance. They also illustrate how an integrated brand experience can extend beyond conventional advertising exposure to create an active relationship between a brand and its audience.

The commercial figures are reported campaign-period results; they should be interpreted in the context of the measurement methodology and comparison period used.

International recognition: a benchmark for creative and technical innovation

Transit Tales has received recognition across international advertising, interactive creativity and out-of-home innovation award programs.

The range of recognition reflects the campaign’s ability to connect creative strategy, integrated execution and technical innovation across multiple disciplines.

What Transit Tales demonstrates about HERO’s approach to creative advertising

Transit Tales illustrates several principles that inform HERO’s approach to brand campaigns.

Insight before technology. The campaign began with an audience behaviour and a cultural tension, rather than an attempt to use AI for its own sake.

A meaningful role for the brand. Mastercard was integrated into an experience that added value to everyday life and connected naturally with the Priceless proposition.

Technology in service of creativity. Generative AI and real-time transit data enabled a new format of personalised storytelling, rather than simply automating an existing advertisement.

Integrated execution. Out-of-home, mobile, audio, social media and retail discovery worked together to create a connected experience.

Commercial accountability. Engagement figures and reported spend and transaction uplifts provide evidence to assess the campaign beyond creative awards alone.

For marketing leaders, the case demonstrates how an independent creative agency can bring together strategic thinking, emerging technology and multi-channel execution to address a real brand challenge.
